Warning: If you don't want to know what happened in this episode, don't read this photo recap!

London, 2017. Some adorable kids fresh from school go looking in an old mausoleum for a witch they've heard about. Instead they find Jennifer Goines. Turns out she owns the place and has been waiting here a while, for "the dying man." But is she too late or too early?

But let's go back to 1897, where Athan and his parents are having their face-off in the church. Cassie and Cole try to reason with him that the red forest and his job as The Witness is not salvation. He's unconvinced but before things get too bad, they sync with his suit and splinter away. Clever!

They jump through a bunch of different times in London, and after a good deal of trickery, Cassie and Cole take Athan back to…

Olivia tells Jones that The Witness's conception is a moment that takes place out of time. Olivia gives them the location, but needs something in order to give Jones the exact "when."

Athan asks when they are and Cole says "right after I ended our lives here" - December 26th, 1959. The family catches up and they tell Athan how much they love him and how long they've searched, but The Witness says his mind is made up to return to Titan and the only way to stop him is to kill him.

Meanwhile, Olivia's demand turns out to be the red tea. She travels back to the time stream and find them. It turns out Athan wasn't asking "when they are" for him, it's for Olivia! This whole time, he's been leading Olivia right to them.

Jones takes Hannah and a team back to 1959 to find The Witness (leaving behind Olivia and somehow Deacon). There is a tense standoff between the family Cole and Katarina Jones, until…

Where Cassie and Cole have worked to splinter Athan out. There's a hitch though - just before he jumps, he's hit by a bullet fired by Jones. Cassie said he was going somewhere safe, but where?

212373

As Cassie, Jones, and Cole are taken to Titan, they're shocked to learn that they weren't supposed to save The Witness, they were just supposed to find him. And then the biggest shock of all, Olivia is here, and she's just killed The Pallid Man.

12Monkeys_gallery_310Recap_13.jpg
212374

It turns out the whole thing was a con. Olivia, spurned way back in Season Two by the people who created her, has orchestrated everything we've seen lately: Ramse's death, all of the chasing down of Cassie and Cole and the Witness. Bent on revenge for being used by the Army, she got all these people to chase Athan down and kill him. The whole thing was a plot to kill The Witness!

12Monkeys_gallery_310Recap_14.jpg
212375

Olivia thanks Jones for kiling The Witness for her and tells the Army that The Witness will never return. How could he? Jones shot him just as he was splintering away. But what if he ended up with...

Jennifer Goines! In the mausoleum. Which is where Eliza, Athan's lady love from last episode, is buried! Turns out the visions of the dying man that Jennifer was having all season was Athan! She has spent some time nursing him back to health. And now, finally, The Witness is ready to return to Titan.

In a standoff with Olivia, she tells Athan how much she hates him and how much she's hated having to follow The Witness. Thing is, though, Athan has one final surprise. This whole time, that person we've seen stalking everyone in the mask and giving orders - it's been Olivia. This is news to her, but she realizes, she's now doomed to go back and trick HERSELF into all of those steps. That is some serious re-watching, team.

Olivia, newly crowned as The Witness, murders Athan. Goodnight, sweet wonderful Athan. So say we all.

And Jennifer Goines learns that the symbols she's been drawing have some purpose yet. She may not know what they are yet, but she will.

A final flashback, though. Little Cole again. And his father. A poem falls out of a children's book. And it has the snake Jennifer's been drawing. When little Cole asks who left it there, his father answers: "Your mother." Woah, Season Four.
