Eight months have passed, and Thale is using his telepathic powers to play some twisted mind games with the crew. And they are super into it.

But Matheson is not. She likes him having friends, but does not like the dark projections he is playing with.

Oh, and she is also telepathic. And having a really hard time controlling her mind and having frightening visions. D'Branin, who she is hooking up with, is well aware and concerned.

But he's also got some things of his own he is working on. Like obsessively studying the organic material from the probe. And pestering Rowan for help.

Who does not want to help, honestly, because he is happily distracted by the fact that he and Tessia are a couple and expecting a baby. And she is pretty far along, as the scan shows.

D'Branin has been running experiments with the organic material from the probe, using it in the memory pod and attempting to communicate with the Volcryn.

While there, he sees his dead daughter, Skye, and communicates with her. Or is it the Volcryn?

Meanwhile, Lommie is in her fantasy world in the ship's computer system and things are not going well. The diner she made is deserted, save for young Cynthia Eris skulking around and causing mayhem.

Mayhem!

Lommie makes it out alive, just. And emerges to find Jhirl at her side, scared for her life and worried about all of their safety. If Cynthia is breaking down the firewalls of the Nightflyer, then everyone on the ship is in danger.

D'Branin has mad-scientist style completely overtaken the memory suite by incorporating the Volcryn's organic material. Rowan seems concerned -- and all the more so when D'Branin says he can communicate with his daughter Skye in there.

When D'Branin suggests that Rowan ignored protocol by deciding to keep his and Tessia's baby, it's not great for their friendship. Rowan is not having it.

Thale's games with the crew start to go wrong. He loses control of his projections and telepathic powers, and terrorizes anyone who gets close with loud noises and horrible images.
