Warning: If you don't want to know what happened in this episode, don't read this photo recap!

Agent Gale! Remember him? Cole's FBI Agent buddy from the past? Met him in 1940s but he was killed in the 60's near the Berlin Wall? Turns out every time someone calls in a disturbance to the famous room at the Emerson Hotel in the 1950's, he rushes to scene. A lot of false alarms but this time - Cassie and Cole are there. Surprise!

Turns out, Cassie and Cole have come for something in 1953 called the "Winter of Ash and Blood" - which they found on the "Word of The Witness" map. They want Agent Gale to help them figure out what it is. He's obsessed with them, so he agrees.

Jennifer Goines, meanwhile, has gone back in time to get her turtle. From where? From when? Hard to say, but boy that's some risky causality, no? Once she gets the two turtles - baby version and current version - safely separated, she sees a (vision?) of…The Witness! No. A dead lady... in a mask.

212276

Cassie and Cole travel to Hope Valley, New Jersey, where The Witness has marked the event on his giant "map." As they argue about whether to tell Agent Gale that he dies in the 60's, a terrible mine explosion rocks the town and as ash rains down, they know they're in the right place.

Meanwhile, Jennifer Goines is freaking out. She'd seen a vision of someone in The Witness mask. And this is how her freak outs usually start that get her locked up. Deacon convinces her that nobody is going to lock her up, she's too important.

Gale figures out that when there are major events around the country in the 50's, people have been going missing. The logical conclusion? Someone is preying on the grief of those killed. But for what?

12Monkeys_gallery_306Recap_07.jpg
212282

Cassie poses as one of the grief stricken widows of the mining accident. And is approached by CHRISTOPHER LLOYD! You guys, it's Doc Brown! Professor Plum! Jim Ignatowsky! Here, though, we call him "The Missionary." And he's here with his son, who turns out to be that old man who runs the Army of 12 Monkeys, in the future - The Pallid Man.

212284

As Gale, Cassie, and Cole arrive at the wake thrown by The Missionary, Cassie can't stand it anymore. She decides to tell Agent Gale the circumstances of his death - that he's gunned down outside the Berlin Wall.

12Monkeys_gallery_306Recap_09.jpg
212286

Inside the wake, Cassie takes a quick minute to check out that watch she took from The Witness' bedroom on Titan. "To My Beloved E" - you guys…what does this mean? Do we know?

12Monkeys_gallery_306Recap_10.jpg
212288

As The Missionary calls the room to order, he introduces his wife. The Messenger. Remember her from Season 2?

12Monkeys_gallery_306Recap_11.jpg
212290

Meanwhile, Jennifer Goines goes to the machine, says she's ready for whatever it is she needs to see, and this dead lady wearing a mask points the way. Who is this?!

12Monkeys_gallery_306Recap_12.jpg
212292

Jennifer sees a lot of scattered images, but wakes up on the floor surrounded by another of her amazing drawings.

12Monkeys_gallery_306Recap_13.jpg
212294

You guys. This spooky woman has clearly been carting around "The Witness" for a while. Yep. Same actor who played Cole in flashback in Season 1. He draws a lot of confusing imagery (he's primary, see) and offers an image of the person they're supposed to choose. Choose for what?

12Monkeys_gallery_306Recap_14.jpg
212296

Turns out, these revivals are as bad as suspected, and actually worse. Turns out the early members of the Army of the 12 Monkeys are these grieving people recruited from wakes, with a certain "chosen few" selected. The rest of the mourners? Well, The Witness fills the room with deadly gas and he and his pals splinter out of there. But at least this explains the gas mask we've seen adult Witness wear in the future!

12Monkeys_gallery_306Recap_15.jpg
212298

Meanwhile, Deacon keeps trying to help Jennifer figure out her visions. No word yet on who the mystery man in the sketch is, but we've seen this image before so we know it's important.

12Monkeys_gallery_306Recap_16.jpg
212300

Cassie and Cole were able to latch onto one of the 12 Monkeys splinter suit henchwomen, who's now dead. Rather than go in after their son, they decide the best plan is to get the suit to Jones, and jump back when they have a plan.

12Monkeys_gallery_306Recap_17.jpg
212302

Cassie says she knows that their son is a monster and she knows what they're supposed to do to stop him. But she doesn't think she can. Cole reminds her that their son was turned evil by the Army of 12 Monkeys - so he knows that if push comes to shove, he'd be able to take The Witness out. Woah. Brutal.
