I Awake: Season 3, Episode 3

WARNING: If you don't want to know what happened in this episode, don't read this photo recap!

In a house full of half-unpacked moving boxes, Jill and Tom are in bed together, super in love. They're recently married and have moved into his family home -- a generous gift from Tom's mom. They hear a noise down in the basement. Quick exploration reveals an unknown dog, and after they head back upstairs a mysterious door appears in the far wall. What is happening?

Jill and Tom are showing every sign of domestic bliss: repainting the dining room and mixing in newlywed romance. (Paint fight! Sexy, and definitely not annoying to clean up later.) Fixing up their home and establishing a life together is a dream come true. What could go wrong?

Jill and Tom host friends for dinner. They tell Tom's friend Jason and his girlfriend the story of how they were gifted the house, and also that boxes in the basement have bits of childhood memorabilia. For example: The illustrations Jill once made of "Pretzel Pete," a creepy contortionist clown. She corrects him: It was "Pretzel Jack." Um... O... K…. ? Yikes!

Jill spots Tom in a heated conversation with a mystery woman at the hardware store. She is clearly concerned, and holds it in. Who is this woman? What is this all about?

Tom calls up from the basement, where he has discovered a mysterious new door that has appeared in the far wall of their basement.

The door won't open, so Tom and Jill call his friend Jason over to investigate. As they pry at it, Jason gets his shotgun. (WAIT, what? Jason, no!) He comes in ready to blast away at the door. They cover their ears and let Jason have at it. He shoots a few times and only manages to blow the door handle off. Also, don't shoot guns in basements, team.

The door has opened to reveal a long, industrial hallway. Jill, Tom and Jason are stunned and terrified, so of course they investigate by flashlight. The shotgun blasts seem to have knocked the power out. (Also, do mystery hallways ever have lights? Probably not....)

Behind the door? Another door, now with a creepy handprint.

Tom and Jason estimate the distance they have traveled from their basement, and guess they are half way to the neighbor's house. So of course they head over there to see if they also have weird basement issues. This neighbor/stranger lets them right in and leads them downstairs, where he acts creepy and mysterious, but has nothing "odd" to report.

After many failed attempts to open the door by Tom, Jill and Jason, Jill heads down there by herself one night. Tom is out, she thinks he's cheating, and she's sad and angry. So Jill heads down to the door alone and places her hand on the handprint. It makes a noise and seems to unlock...

Jill has opened the door to reveal a dark, barren, enclosed room. She shines her flashlight into the room and spotlights a terrifying figure standing with its back to her in the corner.

After the horrifying clown rushes past her, Jill panics. The police are quickly called and she and Tom discuss "the intruder." Jill makes the point that this "intruder" was already in the house. Also, it was alone, in a dark room, locked in, with no food or water or indoor plumbing.

Jill goes through Tom's phone bill and finds lots of calls to a specific number. A woman answers -- Sarah Winters -- and she turns out to be the woman Tom was arguing with at the hardware store. Jill identifies herself as Tom's wife, and Sarah says that if Tom does not leave her alone then she will file a restraining order. Is he having an affair? What is this about?

408544

Jill confronts Tom about his phone calls and asks if he is having an affair. Why did he call Sarah Winters five times in just a few days? He denies it and claims that she is imagining things -- due to her past with an unfaithful father -- and then Tom angrily storms off.

Tom drives to a house, where he is greeted at the door by a new mystery woman in somewhat drapey, evening-around-the-house wear. She coyly invites him in. Welp, he is clearly cheating, as Jill suspects. So, not the "crappy Dad" theory, after all. Thanks.

As Jill and Jason scream at each other, Pretzel Jack appears and hideously murders Jason with a screwdriver as Jill stands aside and screams. When she yells "Stop!," he does. The clown then does a blood-smeared, psychotic, contortionist, acrobatic clown show for no good reason other than, perhaps, to show off his calisthenic skills? It's scary and terrifying. Two for one.
